1818: His mother died.
1831: Failed in business.
1832: Ran for state legislature but lost it. Also lost his job and wanted to go to a law school but couldn't get in.
1833: Borrowed some some from a friend to start a business of his own but went bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off his debt.
1834: Ran for state legislature the second time and won.
1835: Was engaged, when his sweetheart died. His heart was broken and he had a
total nervous breakdown.
1838: Wanted to become a speaker of the state legislature but was defeated.
1840: Sought to elector and was defeated.
1843: Ran for Congress but lost it.
1846: Ran for congress again and won. Moved to Washington and did a good job.
1848: Ran for re-election to Congress and lost it again.
1849: Applied for a Job in his home state but was rejected.
1854: Ran for senate of united state and lost.
1856: Lost the Vice- presidential election of his party.
1858: Ran for U.S. Senate again and lost again.
1860: Elected president of the united State.
